Styles of Acupuncture

Centuries of experimentation led to the development of diverse acupuncture traditions. While all share the same principles, assessment and treatment methods can differ among them. Following are brief descriptions of the main styles I incorporate based on my training and the needs of each patient:

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)

The TCM style was developed in the 20th century in the People's Republic of China in an attempt to standardize what had always been a syncretic medicine. This is the approach currently taught in China, and the majority of acupuncturists in the United States learn this style exclusively. Forms of acupuncture that predate TCM are known as ìclassicalî styles and continue to be practiced as well.

Japanese Acupuncture (in the style of Kiiko Matsumoto)

In Japan, acupuncture has been part of medical practice for roughly 1400 years and developed its own character and traditions. In the Kiiko Matsumoto style, scholarship of the ancient Chinese classics has been integrated with Western medical knowledge. Assessment is based primarily on palpation of abdominal reflexes, and plenty of moxibustion is used along with gentle needling techniques.

Acupuncture Physical Medicine (APM)

Developed by Mark Seem, founder of Tri-State College of Acupuncture, APM is an elaboration of meridian-style acupuncture that emphasizes the release of myofascial constrictions, including Trigger Points. It is particularly effective in the treatment of orthopedic problems, as well as addressing the somatic aspect of many internal conditions.

Auricular Acupuncture

Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture is an example of a micro-system -- an area of the body that reflects and can be used to treat the entire organism. Points on the ear have been shown to correspond to various tissues of the body and have predictable, beneficial effects on specific functions. Ear points are often included in treatments and are widely used for addiction control.

Animal Acupuncture

Veterinarians in the United States have been treating horses with acupuncture for decades, and in China equine acupuncture goes back two thousand years. This acknowledged and respected field of medicine has also benefited cats, dogs, and other animals. It may only be performed by a veterinarian, and if you're considering this option for your animal companion, look for one with formal training in animal acupuncture at www.ivas.org.
